It is also very likely that the reported spams are submitted to an internal database at Yahoo that is used to train their anti-spam filters so that if large numbers of members report the message as spam it will likely be blocked if it is resent to you or other members in the future.

When we mark email or im's as Spam it just blocks it for the future. There are too many for Yahoo or any other mail program to follow up on. The FBI is working on the lottery scams, but they are hard to catch up with.
