What happens to email when they are deleted from inbox or spam folder and finally from the trash folder ?

are the emails lost or deleted by the servers or are they kept stashed somewhere ?What happens to email when they are deleted from inbox or spam folder and finally from the trash folder ?
They are just deleted and probably turn into

cyber dust
